WBW: The Dream Roster for the Ultimate Old School Boy Band

This past week I started playing the latest Madden football video game and one of the options is the ability to construct the "Ultimate Team" using players from throughout the history of the NFL. Well, after hours of careful consideration and much internal debate (seriously, I spent a sizable chunk of my life that I'll never get back), I finally was able to create the Uncle Fan Dream Team. As I was building my squad, I thought that this would be a pretty cool idea to apply to K-pop.

So for the next two weeks here on Way Back Wednesday, I'm going to build my Ultimate Boy Bands and Girl Groups from all the great members from groups past. Today we'll get started with the boy band but first, let me lay down the ground rules for how I selected the members:

  1. The final group will consist of 5 members, each having an official "role" in the group
    1. Lead vocal
    2. Second vocal
    3. Korean rapper
    4. English rapper
    5. Main dancer
  2. Each member has to have been part of an idol group. No solo artists allowed
  3. Each members' group must have performed between the years 1995-2003 (can still be active but the group has to have debuted in that window)
  4. Cannot have multiple members from the same original group
You can debate the rules all you want but it's my list so here we go!

Lead Vocal: Kim Tae Woo

For my money, the former g.o.d lead singer was the best idol vocalist from back in the day. That slightly husky voice has incredible range (of both octave and emotion) and has only gotten better over the years. Granted he's not the best looking apple in the barrel but it's OK. The man has got groove, skills, and will be a great addition to the group. Also, you need someone who's good on variety talk shows and can help promote the group.

Second Vocal: Kim Junsu

The former TVXQ singer and current JYJ crooner has the pipes to stand up to Kim Tae Woo but also add his own flavor to the band. He's also got dancing chops to keep up with any moves and wouldn't slow the group down at all. Also, when the group makes their obligatory foray into the Japanese market, we need a little love from the fans and Junsu will be the main man there. He can also act as the official "maknae" or youngest member of the group since K-pop fans seem to love those guys the most.

Korean Rapper: Eric Mun

Many of you are probably saying, "Eric? Isn't he the English rapper of Shinhwa? The guy lived in LA for Pete's sake!" Well, you're right but I'm not interested in what he did for Shinhwa, I'm more interested in what he can do for this band. Anyone who's heard him rap knows that his Korean is perfectly fine and on top of that, growing up in the U.S. exposed him to old school rap which has only helped his abilities. And let's not forget that every group needs a "face"; you know, the good looking guy that can be at the center of the team. I think we have our face.

English Rapper: Teddy Park

Was there any doubt? The former 1TYM leader is the obvious choice to be the man laying down the English rap tracks for the squad. As a native of SoCal, he also brings that West Coast swagger which the team needs for it's eventual expansion out into the U.S. market and helping the team succeed abroad. The big X-factor with Teddy is his ability to write and produce music. That talent will help the group stay fresh and self-reliant while creating a unique sound for the group.

I used this video recently but finding a video of Teddy rapping alone is proving to be challenging.

Main Dancer: Moon Hee Jun

This might be another surprise choice but Moon Hee Jun is one of the more underrated dancers in K-pop. He was instrumental in creating many of H.O.T's and SM Entertainment's earliest choreography and he still has the ability to throw down. He'll be a big help in choreographing the team's dances and help hone a sense of style for the band. Yeah, he doesn't do the acrobatic stuff and big breaking power moves like today's idols but that's not the only kind of dancing there is.

There you have it, my ultimate old school boy band. Of course some people are going to disagree but I'm not going to make any apologies for my choices. What I would like to see though is your line-up for YOUR ultimate boy band because I'm sure there will be some good ones. You know, this was fun... we might have to do this again someday.

The men of 'Heirs' show their six different types of charisma

Heirs' wasn't lacking in the visual department in terms of its cast, making it hard to choose which actor to ship, and the new still cuts make that decision even harder to make!

The individual still cuts show Lee Min Ho, Kim Woo Bin, Choi Jin Hyuk, CNBLUE's Minhyuk, ZE:A's Hyungsik, and Kang Ha Neul each giving their charismatic eye contact.

Kim Woo Bin shared, "Although all of us play around prior to filming, once the cameras start rolling, the looks in all the actors' eyes can't get any more serious. Including myself, it feels like everyone has been totally possessed by 'Heirs'."

Choi Jin Hyuk shared, "Since Kim Won is a character with complicated emotions, I am thinking a lot [about my character]. I am always working hard to express his love and hatred towards his younger brother, Kim Tan, and his love for Hyun Joo."

A rep commented, "'Young blood' actors around the same age gathered together for 'Heirs', and they are giving energy with their hot passion and sense of responsibility for the production. Please look forward to the sexy, diabolical, and passionate teenage love story of the six real manly men who get caught up in a storm of drama starting on the 7th episode of 'Heirs'."

Which actor has caught your eye?

The cast of 'Heirs' have fun with each other in BTS photos

Lee Min Ho, Park Shin Hye, Kim Woo Bin, and Kim Ji Won couldn't help but to break out into laughter on the set of 'Heirs'!

Although Kim Tan (Lee Min Ho) and Choi Young Do (Kim Woo Bin) seemingly hate each other's guts in the drama, the two actors joke around with each other behind-the-scenes. Park Shin Hye is also caught red-handed with her selca obsession and Kim Ji Won is seen actually smiling.

Lee Min Ho shared, "I've always been the maknae in my previous productions but among the 'Heirs' team, I am the oldest hyung so I feel a sense of responsibility. The entire cast get along well so we are have a good time while filming."

Catch 'Heirs' this Wednesday and Thursday!

L Wants to Shoot the Infinite Album Photos in the Future

While he may be standing in front of the cameras for official Infinite activities, Infinite’s L expressed his wish to stand behind the camera at one point.

In a recent photo shoot with fashion magazine Nylon, L talked about the difference between his first and second photo essay.

“I recently released my second photo book,” said L. “I wanted to hear people say, ‘When I saw the book, this kid seemed all right. He’s not just an idol, but has a emotional and innocent side to him.”

Talking about his ongoing hobby as a photographer, L said, “When I get older and get more experienced, I want to personally take the jacket photos for Infinite or participate in the album design. When the opportunity comes, I also want to work on the fashion shoots for the other members too.”

As a singer and sometimes actor, Heo Young Saeng naturally has ties to top stars in the idol and acting worlds, and we’re delving into the star’s celebrity friendships.

Seo Ji Suk

Heo Young Saeng is known to be close friends with actor Seo Ji Suk and even served as the MC at the actor’s wedding.

The two stars have displayed their close friendship professionally as well, as Heo Young Saeng lent his voice to the song the actor and Lee Chung Ah composed and wrote on MBC reality show
Music & Lyrics 2.

Seo Ji Suk returned the favor by making a cameo in Heo Young Saeng’s music video for
The Art of Seduction.

The two stars are also on the same celebrity soccer team.

Park Ji Bin

Young actor Park Ji Bin is also known to be Heo Young Saeng’s close friend, as the two stars have been spotted at VIP screenings together frequently.

Park Ji Bin is also an avid soccer fan, and Heo Young Saeng has often tweeted about their soccer adventures.

MBLAQ’s Mir

MBLAQ’s Mir revealed he was close friends with Heo Young Saeng, when he appeared on Mnet’s
Star VJ Show and chose to call up his hyung on the ‘Friendship Test’ segment of the show.

When Mir texted Heo Young Saeng to test their friendship, the quick SS501 member responded, “Why? Is this a psychology test?”

Go Ara

Heo Young Saeng boasted his close friendship with actress Go Ara when he tweeted a photo with the star back in 2012, writing “I went to the screening of Ara’s ‘Pacemaker.’ I enjoyed it!! I hope it hits the jackpot!! FIghting. This is a proof shot. Thanks for inviting me.”

Heo Young Saeng has often shown his support for the actress by appearing at her film’s screenings.

JYJ’s Kim Jae Joong

Before Heo Young Saeng made his debut with SS501, he was an SM Entertainment trainee, where he met fellow trainee and current JYJ member Kim Jae Joong.

We’re not surprised by this history, however, as SM overfloweth with pretty boys.
